On August 25th, John Leslie is set to release his newest work of art, a single titled “The History of Sugar”. Inspired by possibly the most driving force of an emotion a human can have, love, the song takes us into the world of romance, but also loss, forgiveness, and resilience. At the heart of it all is a girl unlike any other, but the path of love is not quite as straightforward, or even predictable for that matter.
OUT NOW NOW!

This story, described by the poetic, almost biographical lyrics, begins with a fateful meeting. Tenderness and passion were to follow, but sadly they soon found out they were not a match and decided to part on friendly terms. This, and the intermixed feelings of sadness and acceptance are enveloped in a suitably passion-infused musical atmosphere. Latin rhythms and instruments, jazzy melodies, and Leslie’s silky smooth vocals build a velvety hazy picture with enough depth and detail that it just invites you to come to get lost in the song and witness of burning love of the heart of glass, followed by longing and sorrow.

The song, born from the collaboration between Leslie and ARIA award inductee and member of “The Church”, Peter Koppes, has a distinct feeling of timelessness embedded in its lush production. It’s a classic right from the start and stands well along with the well-known ballads of love. What makes John Leslie’s song even better is that wholehearted acceptance, and despite the world of sadness “The History of Sugar” keeps an invitingly warm core.
