Icelandic indie act SoundThing just released their latest single, “Upside Down”, and it’s as captivating as it is mesmerizing. The quartet manages to fuse a perfectly crafted indie folk with some early 90s grunge influences, resulting in a sound that is truly inspiring and interesting.

“Upside Down” is the second single coming from the band, released in anticipation of their debut EP Bleed which will be out by the end of October. On “Upside Down”, the band pushes their sound towards an almost Country/American direction that works beautifully and resonates as something unique. Singer Ásta Sigríði Sveinsdóttir’s vocals are both haunting and soft, contributing to the build-up of an atmosphere that feels thick and encircles the listener completely.
The song talks about feeling upside down because of a relationship, with powerful lyrics such as ‘and we’ll never be alright ’cause we are just so blind‘ indicating that things are less than ideal. There is something that reads as incredibly relatable and universal in this song, sometimes a relationship can consume you and make everything feel wrong even when you don’t realize it at first.
“Upside Down” does a masterful job in recreating an atmosphere that emules feeling trapped in something and not fully knowing how to get out of it. The production is just as astounding as the one we heard on “Have You Seen the Place” back in September, showcasing the band’s ability to incorporate raw emotions and intricate background sounds seamlessly.
SoundThing’s triumph relies on their emotional lyrics and incredibly human production, making the best possible use of everything that surrounds them. “Upside Down” is a remarkable track, and a very intriguing step for the band so early in their career. Bleed, their upcoming debut EP, will definitely be worth a listen and I can’t wait.
