Pent Up! songs often center around visceral feelings. Loss, love, regret, uncertainty, and acceptance all show up as driving themes in their lyrics and their music. This time, the American band makes an electrifying comeback that will shake your very foundations and take you on a reckless drive!
Recorded completely live, “Pepper” ignites a spark through its blazing riffs and its driving bass. Added to that, the ground-shaking drums and deeply rooted vocals finish to construct a brilliant and nostalgic theme song that speaks through the eyes of a consternated criminal.
Through the eyes of the remaining member of a pair of larcenous partners, “Pepper” tells a loose story of how being thick as thieves can be as fleeting as a summer breeze.
Lead singer and writer, Brendan Honeycutt, found his inspiration as he filled his mind with scenes from the movie Double Indemnity. “I remember being struck by the film’s opening, where Frank McMurray’s mortally wounded Walter Neff starts to recount his fall from grace, due to misplaced affections and horrible actions, into a Dictaphone as he slowly spirals to his end“, Brendan explains.
The song might come with a wistful meaning behind it, but it certainly achieves such a level of energy and emotions that it invigorates anyone who listens, inducing them into a thrilling experience of nerve-wracking melodies. So, listen now!
“This, and the last single “Up All Night”, were recorded live on the same day at Peel Studios on a very hot day toward the end of July. We crammed 4 excessively sweaty guys (and a sorta-sweaty engineer) into a small studio with no air conditioning. This song is the result. Plus we each lost like 5 pounds of water weight that day.“
