The artwork is a detail of a mural in East London. The painting, designed by artist Dave Binnington, commemorates the battle of Cable Street, where British fascists’ rally was stopped by the local anti-fascists in 1936. I think it depicts quite fittingly the slightly chaotic vibe of the song. As potential political statements go in this context, make it what you will!

“Where do you see yourself in five years? is of course the infamous question at job interviews. And even more notorious it becomes when put into a more general or philosophical context, as I have tried to do here. The song began life as a reflection on the uncertainties we all face in our lives: am I doing the right decision here, should I have taken another route there, what’s in store for me round that corner, will I ever reach contentment, and so forth.”

With passionate harmonica riffs and overdubs of ASMR percussions, the London-based artist crafted a cabaret-esque track that shines through its ever-growing instrumentation and developing choruses. A groovy and moody atmosphere with references to ancient Rome, and calls and responses of a Greek chorus!

The single was produced by Teaboy Palmer, who happens to play the devilish melodies of the harmonica. Fuzzed and staccato electric guitars guide the stomping drums, while a whirly organ lays down the Maquiavelic vibes.

At the time of writing the song, Russia suddenly started their appalling war on Ukraine. It then felt quite natural to add one more level of uncertainty into the mix: the ultimate fear in many young people’s lives is to be conscripted and lose their personal freedom that way – and quite possibly lose their life!

Tom Minor keeps preparing himself, single after single, for the release of his upcoming full-length debut album, Eleven Easy Pieces on Anger & Disappointment, and “Where Do You See Yourself In 5 Years” promises a high dose of Bluesy riffs, semi-poignant melodies and a boisterous deadpan vocal swagger.

So, listen now!

Although musically I consider myself broadly as a classic indie rock artist, I do have an affinity for many more rootsy genres as well. This one leans strongly towards blues – I guess in the same sleazily glam way that T Rex or early Bowie used to do. The fuzzy guitar and the numerous percussion details work in that direction, I think. My producer Teaboy Palmer is quite fluent with the blues harp as well, so what he did with it on the track didn’t fall very far from that tree either.
