The Swiss-German duo Matka is back with another single, called “Das Versteck” and in it, the duo tells one epic story pulled straight from Greek Mythology – it’s a very interesting ride from start to finish.

Matka is a project made up of Swedish artist and singer Ulrika Segerberg and German musician Martin Kleinmichel; the two met on the set of a television shoot, and immediately started making music together. The both of them played side by side on mathcore band Kratze in Berlin; and later on, began their project as a duo exploring Ulrika’s lyrics in multiple languages and Martin’s dark electronic sounds. It was a match made in Heaven.
The two of them just released their latest single, “Das Versteck”, which roughly translates to “The Hiding Place” from the example explore the tale of Perseus’s quest for Medusa. With lyrics in both English and Swedish, “Das Versteck” stands as an impeccable example of the duo’s biggest strength: dark pop experimentations, rich and thick productions filled with weird little noises that create an otherworldly ambiance.
Painting a detailed pictured filled with curses, blood and stones, Matka creates an atmosphere of tension that feels incredibly vivid. The production on “Das Versteck” is the most ambitious the duo’s put out yet, and it pays off completely. The drumming pacing the song forward, the keyboards on the background seem to both ground the song and let it take off; but all of it is tied together by Ulrika’s spoken word vocals and soft delivery that add an extra layer of eerieness to the song, making it sound like a fantasy story or fairytale.
The juxtaposition from the modern experimental electronic production with the lyrics pulled out of a Greek classic makes the song a remarkable listen, keeping you on the edge of your seat not knowing what the next verse is going to bring you. “Das Versteck” shows that Matka is one of the most interesting and creative electronic acts right now, one that is not afraid of leaning into the darkness and exploring it as it was a cave system. I can’t think of many other artists who could pull off a song like this, and they do it with ease and beauty – definitely not something that happens every day.
