Gary Dranow has been raining singles from a new upcoming album since August. Recently at the tail end of November he released a fifth single in a waterfall of monthly releases titled “Sandy Beaches.” The predecessor to “Shimmering” in October, “Cry Of War” in September, “Golden Child” and “I’m a Man” in August.

The upcoming album associated with the singles is titled “Never Give Up,” a fitting name for Gary Dranow, a dynamic artist that has been playing music since the nineties until a ten-year downtime and a relearning the guitar due to a life threatening, serious, medical condition. And even beyond that, he has also been open about his bouts with Bipolar Disorder and Mania.

Under the care of Dr. Kalm (what a name for a psychiatrist by the way); Dranow epitomizes the title of the upcoming album “Never Give Up” releasing a rush of inspiration that is geared to only double down come the new year. That’s right, what has been monthly now is gearing up to be weekly releases of singles starting in January for 24 weeks! The album is to be a double album. His band, The Manic Emotions, already penning a third album to come.

On to the new single. As the lore goes, Dranow wrote this song about a homeless war veteran he knew in Santa Monica, California. It’s sung from this person’s point of view and catalogs a turbulent emotional state, lyrically tap dancing around a wordplay that begs the question, is “the war we never won,” the literal war the person fought in, or an emotional one within. It’s a harder rocking song on average than what I’ve heard on the blues laden, classic rock of the previous album, “Destiny Road,” and very much aligned with the aurora of alternative rock.

Crunchy guitar work, pulsating baselines, thunderous kick drums, and Dranow’s “Weiland-esque” vocal approach bring to mind soundscapes the likes of Stone Sour, Velvet Revolver, Adelitas Way, Pop Evil, and Theory of a Dead Man by my ear. It’s a fine recommendation for fans of that late nineties Hard Rock /Alternative crossover.
