Dead Storm Rising is a brand-new anonymous band from Seattle, USA. Created by Wraith (guitars/bass/drums); a well-known musician in the Seattle music scene that is choosing to develop this studio project under this name anonymously, he is joined by Kitsune on piano/keyboards/backup vocals and Hræsvelgr on the baritone vocals.

“I compose and arrange all of the music, and record the drums, bass, and guitars. I’ve completed the lineup for this studio project with my wife (Kitsune) on piano/keys/pads, backup vocals, and cello… and my brother-in-law (Raze) on lead vocals. We have all taken on personas, it removes any ego from the music and places the focus on the overall aesthetic and the music. There is no personal glory to be found here, only the sum total of Dead Storm Rising.”

“Leo” is part of French label Bitume Prod’s tribute to the band Failure (two albums released on Bandcamp free to stream). While Dead Storm Rising was working on recording original tracks for their debut EP, a looming deadline pushed this cover to the forefront. The result? A powerful re-imagination of the 90’s Neo-Punk Grunge single.

Why this song? I was drawn to the story of the recluse that can’t relate to anybody. It’s a catchy tune on the surface… but there’s so much more beneath… the anxiety that Leo suffers, his trouble coping with his self-perceived shortcomings, the sense that he’s afraid to leave the safety of his own home. And why? What brought this on for Leo? Was it a condition he was born with? Has it manifested in response to a childhood trauma? There’s so much to explore.”

Taking inspiration from bans like Type O Negative, Paradise Lost, Lacuna Coil, and Tool, the track’s sound was molded to be gritty and gloomy, with high distortion and vast amounts of dark overtones. I must admit I’ve never heard the original track before, but I’m pretty sure that it isn’t close to this version!

While adapting this song to the gothic doom metal style, my goal was to inject as much raw emotion into the sound as I could, exploring the peaks and valleys, while staying true to the original tune. We went with the idea that there’s a childhood trauma behind Leo’s fears, phobias, and his inability to connect with anybody on a personal level, and this was represented with the chimes of a music box at the end of the track.

DRS

Despite the deadlines, Dead Storm Rising are still preparing their debut EP with original tracks, but we now have this cover as a taste of what’s to come. Somber and mysterious, this new-formed band promises refreshing musical ideas for the Gothic and Doom Metal genres. So, listen now!

“Dead Storm Rising is a passion project for me. I play multiple styles and instruments, and I’ve played in many bands over the years; each rewarding in their own way. But my desire to produce music that speaks to my inner darkness remained unfulfilled. I can bounce around on stage with uptempo rock music, and I can whip my hair around while cranking out melodic death metal, but there’s still the darkness inside me that yearns to be released.

I have chosen to remain anonymous to keep Dead Storm Rising entirely separate from my other projects, taking on the persona known as Wraith. Per Scottish folklore, a wraith is believed to be an apparition of someone on the verge of death or that has recently died. In a sense, Wraith is the ghost of myself while I am still here on this mortal plane.”

“I began writing original music for this project earlier this year, but pushed Leo ahead to meet Bitume’s deadline. We will soon be releasing another single titled Lullaby; a song that explores the idea that one can find comfort in nightmares to escape the pain and suffering that occurs around us all in the real world.”
