Michelle Lockey, a US-based solo artist, is ready to reveal her newest works. This time, the singer-songwriter takes on a dive deep into her soul and the result is music that discusses heavy themes with brutal honesty. One of the first songs coming from this line is a tale stemming from when the artist was in school, a bullied kid that couldn’t understand why she wasn’t liked. This is “Why Don’t They Choose Me?”, a thoughtful song on the effects of bullying.

The song opens up in the format of acoustic guitar ballad based on an airy and cooled down duo of poignant guitar strumming and Michelle Lockey’s emotional vocals. The lyrics stay on a simple lane to really show the rough raw thoughts of a kid that’s not accepted for who she is. That includes the honesty of what the whole thing makes her feel like, which is ..brutal, and very true. “Why Don’t They Choose Me?” is surrounded by an atmosphere that completes the story with the unwelcome feeling of coldness. It’s a story of suffering in loneliness.

This sorrowful song is the second to come from Michelle’s upcoming project, which she says is going to be highly personal and a departure from the commercially friendly lane. There will be lots of self-reflection, regrets and revelations for a growing mind lost in the battles to think about. Michelle shares more about the upcoming release and the single:

“I am currently working on an album that deeply explores emotions and events in my childhood that molded me in a way to have low self worth, low self esteem and even self hate. I never felt good about myself when I was younger. I wanted to be pretty, popular and liked. I tried to be with the popular crowd but there were always those people who didn’t like you, made fun of you, but yet, I still tried to hang out with them. I had one friend, what I thought was a good friend, that always found a way to put me down.

I didn’t really think of it as bad at the time, because I felt bad about myself. And even now with social media, likes and that somehow makes us better? more liked? to feel good about ourselves- ugh, I find myself falling into that trap sometimes. So, I wanted to be honest and explore that in this song. I wanted something moody and a bit indie. I really liked the song July by Noah Cyrus so wanted to do something in that style. I want people to know they are not alone if they feel or have felt that way.”

Michelle offers a truthful glimpse into what it really feels like to be a bullied kid, who’s also battling with self-hatred. As someone who was also bullied in school and left with raging hate for the bullies, this song feels like the painful truth coming from those that were also bullied and stood in silence, not feeling good in their skin.

For the music video enthusiasts, the single also has a music video recorded by Michelle herself. Featuring the artist singing and playing guitar in the studio, the clip also contains clips of children feeling isolated and being bullied. But once the courage to stand up comes through, there will be smiles on the face of a lovely girl. : )
