American singer and songwriter Shannen Bamford hails from New York City and has a number of impressive singles under her belt, and she’s just released a brand new one – and it’s a cover. The song chosen by Shannen, and her producer Uri Kleinman was contemporary pop classic “Hallucinate”, from Albanian singer Dua Lipa.

It’s always fascinating to me when one artist decides to reimagine and rework a song originally made by someone else, especially when they put their own spin on it and take it to a completely different direction. This is exactly the case with Shannen’s Version of “Hallucinate”. On her own material, we get a lot of chill indie with gorgeous dream pop influences, but on “Hallucinate” we get to see a whole new side of Shannen that is beautifully explored – and I hope some of this rubs off on her original stuff as well, it’s just so good.
Her take on “Hallucinate”, Shannen blends perfectly her own style with a more upbeat and traditional pop approach, and it sounds so good. It helps that the song itself is an absolute banger, of course – a gem of modern pop music released at the height of the pandemic and part of Dua Lipa’s game-changing album Future Nostalgia. The way Shannen and Uri incorporate acoustic guitars and make the bassline sound even funkier and more prominent was an incredibly smart choice.
You can definitely hear how much fun they’re having with this cover, and it translates perfectly. This is most likely due to the fact that this was recorded with no pretentions at all, as Shannen herself told us.
“[We] recorded our cover of “Hallucinate” together during the pandemic, originally as a pre-save incentive for my 2020 single “Slow Fade”. When they pre-saved, they were directed to an unlisted YouTube link with the “Hallucinate” video that I filmed and edited“, she says.
But the cover was so successful and resonated so nicely with the audience that they requested for it to be available everywhere and now it finally is! “Recently the video started gaining some traction again and I had people reaching out asking me if I planned to release it on all platforms. I have a lot of original music in the pipeline the be released in 2024 so I thought this would be a nice way to warm people up to my upcoming releases!“, Shannen concludes.

Shannen Bamford, who also has a magnificent cover of boygenius’s “Bite the Hand” released in 2020, kicks her new year off in the most perfect of ways. This a brand-new rendition of a beloved pop song, that is faithful enough for it to be recognizable by anyone but still original enough to get us all excited for her own original material. And it’s just unbelievably fun!
