Singer-songwriter Jen Stevens is ready to release a brand-new song “My Mother’s Daughter”. The UK artist has made her name with soulful, authentic and heartfelt lyricism and songwriting, and the new song will also promise to pull on the listeners’ heartstrings. “My Mother’s Daughter” is a gentle yet powerful ballad about searching for your strength when everything crumbles apart, powered by the love and gratitude for her late mother.

It is no lie that life knows how to throw curveballs sometimes. Jen Stevens’ new song came to be in one of such times when everything was just dark. Grief and helplessness painted the sky black, and they also influence the beginning of the song which exposes the ache along with feeling lost. Choral vocals create an atmosphere suitable for serious soul search and give stage for Jen’s emotional voice accompanied by supporting piano melodies.
“My Mother’s Daughter” starts off with really deep and hard-hitting thoughts. “Am I an impostor in my own body?” she ponders with heavy heart, giving comfort to listeners in the same position through her vulnerability. And as the song carries on, an updraft is found through the memory of her loving mother, and the realization that one step further is one step out towards healing and out of this darkness. So, the ballad becomes an empowering exclamation of finding your strength, faith and newfound identity.
“I went through a really tough time a few years ago. I lost my mother, my marriage broke down, and I had a really bad time with my mental health as a result. My first album, ‘Little One’ (2017), was a documentation of that time. It explores themes of grief, of depression, but also of glimpses of hope and growth.
The album that this single is from, ‘Armour,’ (due out 1st March) is a collection of songs narrating moving on from that really dark place, and is about surrounding yourself with the right people (or ‘armour’ if you like!). My mum was an incredible woman, she really was. I still have bad days, but at the end of them I remind myself who’s daughter I am, straighten my crown and pick myself back up. That’s what ‘My Mother’s Daughter’ is all about.”
