I Panic aka Dutch musician Marcel van Tetering is back with eyes full of excitement – he has a debut EP up his sleeve and ready for release. Uplifting, caressing and wholly heartfelt are just some of the adjectives that come to mind when listening to “Growing Up in Public”. When it comes to lyrics sung by I Panic’s slightly hoarse, but emotional voice, there’s a lot of meaning put into poetic verses here, written in the form of self-inspecting string of thought. It’s inviting the connection and recognition of those feelings in the listener’s mind, yet I Panic has brought out the beautiful side of things. Even the darkest moments still represent what it’s like to live as a human being with heart full of love, yearning for connection.
The EP is home to 6 songs, most of which are actually already available on all platforms. With one difference though and the EP’s title – “Growing Up In Public” – hints at it. Those songs originally released 3 years ago now have a brand-new version bridging the artist’s new skills with the diverse and relevant themes explored by the songs. Among other things, the vocals sound a whole lot better and so the presence of instruments. While the originals have a lively DIY feel to them, the 2024 Mix brings in a proper studio feel without losing the emotion. The EP is one proper look into the development of an artist and his skills.
Mood-wise,”Growing Up In Public” includes a range of eventful moods. Not least of which is the rowdy ska-punk styled “Kill The Dog” that rants about noisy neighbors and the desire for silence. There’s love on the album shown in its glorious size in “I Will Never”, a song that promises in anthemic elevation to be always there, and the folk-rock ballad “Take My Hand”. In addition to the new versions, I Panic has also included a new, or rather a newly discovered old and unreleased song “Yo-Yo Man”, a fiery speedy song of a dysfunctional relationship that’s not quite sure what it wants.

I Panic is offering a lovely package of music that’s diverse enough to fit whatever you’re going through. And at it, there’s a lot of ear-caressing listening pleasure to experience!
