The Barren Spinsters Released Dope New Folk Rock Album: Let the Music Ruin Your Life.

The Barren Spinsters "Let The Music Ruin Your Life" artwork

Let the Music Ruin You Life by The Barren Spinsters is seriously good music for people who don’t take themselves too seriously or at least played by a band that knows how to be self-deprecating in a fun tongue and cheek way. Musically this blends folk, blues, country and soul with good old fashioned fucking rock n’ roll.

The album opens with “It Takes a Lifetime” a rollicking opening track which reminds me a little bit of 70’s Aerosmith. It’s full of blues licks, thumping rhythm section and deep rich vocals that sing to your soul. It gest soft and comes back hard over and over again just like you like it. You know what I’m talking about. It would take a lifetime for most people to write such a solid fucking ass rock tune, and some would never get there.

Skipping down to the third track, “Living Back at Home”, with it’s bluesy opener that reminds me of George Thorogood mixed with Blues Traveler, I immediately feel like grabbing an ice cold beer and dancing away my problems. This track hits home to all of us that have struggled financially. I tried to not care about money as I grew older, but it’s hard to live without it. As my father once said, “Money won’t make you happy, but neither will poverty” which this song can attest to.

“We started writing for the album back in 2020, just before COVID hit. We both also became first time dads, so it’s taken a little bit longer to get this new one out. But we’re absolutely stoked with how it turned out, and hope people dig it!”

Moving down to track ten, “It Won’t Change a Thing”, which opens with a dirty ass fucking riff filled with grit and stank. Then it comes over you with powerful vocals that are here to learn you good. What lesson are you learning? That no matter what you do in life, the status quo will continue to reign supreme. Can I say that I dig the big splashy open hi hat? Well I just did, so tough crap if your answer was no. Also those flams on the snare towards the end with those high pitched guitar lead bends!! Hot damn!

The highlight of the album may be the final song, “Paint Another Picture”, which is a fucking great way to end an album i.e. making me wish there were more. It reminds me a bit of The Black Crows but with more balls. This is a rocker to blast driving down the road with your top down taking in all the good things that life has to offer. The guitar riffs are sick and totally held down by a bottom rhythm section that knows when to accent and when to lay back. And it’s all finished off with a rad ass guitar solo that just leaves it all on the floor.

If you need some of this Aussie rock, I’d suggest you save your nickels and get ready to buy this album on vinyl or CD when it comes out on The Barren Spinster’s own record label, Audioary Records, on February 23, 2024!
