American composer and pianist Jonathan Grow returns to share his newest piece “Devenir”, a celebration of becoming the person one is today. And so, the piece follows the artist from the days of being a little kid getting to know himself and the world, running all the way through trials and tribulations of growing up and celebrating the day today as a man he had become. “Devenir” aka “Becoming” in French, is a courageous, multifaceted story of growing up.

As is for all beginnings, “Devenir” starts off very softly with just a gentle calm piano melody that both builds the atmosphere for the little child, and introduces the motif, a melody line that sets the flow of what is to come. With time, the piano core is joined by new elements, describing the gradual growing up and experiencing new things in life. Strings are the first to join, as they still keep the general atmosphere soft and full of wonder, but they also reflect the new layers on becoming older and gaining depth of character. You’ve now entered teenage hood.
First wind instruments and the tentative feelings of minor notes describe the turbulent years, deep bassy notes interacting with shimmery elements of percussion. It has now become a symphonic piece, and new instruments keep coming in to build more into the increasingly complex landscapes of a person’s self. The motif still leads the journey, changing yet being the same recognisable melody now played by different instruments.
By the time of the last quarter of “Devenir”, the piece has grown into a massive triumphant symphonic show that could easily just go and touch the skies with its joy and might. Now depicting a fully matured artist who has grown to be the man he had wished to become; the piece is home to all the shapeshifting experiences that led the “Becoming” to lead this far and this way. In a way, one could say this is an autobiographical piece, wholly personal and yet very much universally approachable.
“Devenir” is part of Jonathan Grow’s new EP “3”, which contains three pieces, each describing a different side of human experience. Among the pieces is also “Le Vol” released back in 2022 and following a parent suffering from ’empty nest syndrome’ as the last fledgling leaves home. The number “3” is seen in multiple forms throughout the EP – from the use of triplets and meters centered around 3 to each piece having a three-act structure. Most importantly, it also refers to Grow’s early musical journey starting at the age of 3, the important starting point that fueled it all.
