All the way from Chattanooga, Tennessee, American alternative rocker Jason Lyles returns with brand new single “Deflated”, a song that deals heavily with loss and death. Jason has been around for a bit, exploring the alt rock sounds and adding to them his own personal flare, be either in form of little country elements or just his signature lyricism and humanness. Things are no different with “Deflated”, the latest single from his upcoming new album that followed “The Light” a bit earlier in the year.

On “Deflated”, Jason Lyles crafts a beautiful metaphor and relates the act of dying to a balloon losing its air. It is a stunning string of words, and what’s most impressive is that he sings about dying in the first person. The storytelling narrative that permeates “Deflated” is sorrowful, but as the production swirls around his lyrics and vocals we do get some sort of hopefulness as well; or at least, the atmosphere created isn’t entirely dark or overwhelming for the listener.
“This song is definitely the darkest thing I’ve done, but I hope others can find the release I did with it. Deflating is a metaphor for life slipping away from a living thing”, Jason himself says about the track.
Inspired by the demise of a beloved pet and written on a sad night by Jason alongside long-time producer Andrew Preavett and violinit Stephanie Brooks, “Deflated” manages to bring a fresh perspective on the act of dying – such a natural part of life, and yet so dreaded by us all.
The hauntingly beautiful imagery created by such comparison makes the song appear not too overwhelming, and its somewhat upbeat production makes it sound like the lovechild of Coldplay and My Chemical Romance in the best possible way.
“Deflated” is a stunning piece of music, bringing light and lightness to such a dark subject matter. It deals with death and dying in an incredibly delicate and intimate way, without ever taking away from it the importance and grief that will follow. A song that is filled with nuance and richness, this truly stands out as one of the highlights from Jason’s career up until now and I cannot wait to hear the full album.
