London-born and currently based in Vienna, Austria, Mark Peters is a singer and songwriter whose work has been going around since 2017 with a handful of albums and EPs along the way. His latest release is an acoustic rendition of the track “Grace of the Fall”, released today while the acoustic version is due out March 15th. By stripping down the track, Mark gave us a new depth to it and it functions as a very interesting step in the shaping of his sound.

“This version was never intended to be released. I listened to it a few times and then began to really like it.”

“It’s recorded in one-take with no editing on the guitar or vocal tracks in order to capture the live feel. I wrote the guitar part around 20 years ago but, as with many songs, the right words took another 20 years to come.”

On the past, Mark Peters’ sonic waves had given us an impeccably produced indie folk journey, filled with country and americana influences that work really well with his vocals and stories. On the acoustic version of “Grace of the Fall”, he really shows us his strengths as a songwriter – and this works exactly because of its simplicity. This time around, he delivers the song free of distractions in an attempt to replicate the authenticity of a solo live performance and he absolutely succeeded.

It’s absolutely stunning how Mark manages to pull this off, especially it being a song that has been around for a very short time – it’s not like he’s revisiting an earlier single from his career. This is a brand new song, being released in two different versions roughly at the same time and there is true beauty to be found in both of them.

“Grace of the Fall is about respecting and honouring your past. It’s about the what could have been’s and the what if’s. It’s a simple love song at it’s heart“, he says about the track. The original stands tall and beautiful on its own, but the acoustic truly honors that feeling of it being ‘a simple love song at it’s heart’ and it manages to make it sound even more magical, human and vulnerable than the previous one.

As a way to achieve this sound he was striving for, Mark turned to a trick he learned when he was nine: “by putting a thin strip of card between the strings of my Martin, I achieved this woody harmonic sound which I really wanted to get down“, and those sounds really contribute to elevating the experience of the solo live performance very neatly.

There is intimacy in this, sounding like the song is being constructed for the very first time as you hear it. “I wanted to record something brutally honest and with emotion, like the way I hear my voice break when I’m first writing a song in my bedroom at 1am“, he concludes about the track. And, once again, this experiment was truly a success that took an already beautiful song to the next level.
