Spanish electronic force of nature Carlos Ucedda is back with another banger, “At the Bottom”, released just a little over a month since his last single. As per tradition, his new sound is a full 180 from where he was when we last heard from him – “At the Bottom” features some upbeat pulsating synths in the best style of Depeche Mode or Robyn, leaving behind the ethereal loss of “Short Time My Love“.

Carlos Ucedda continues to expand his musical horizons and adding such depth to his compositions, it’s absolutely outstanding. The production on “At the Bottom” mixes up a lot of different elements very nicely, like the marriage between the synths and strings heard in the break after the chorus. There are several interesting influences converging into one mighty sound, that never once sounds over the top or megalomaniac but places its cards on simplicity done right.

The way Carlos manages to keep up his experimental side and unique voice inside electronic music production while making a straightforward 80s synth pop song is stunning from the very start, and it does a wonderful job in keeping the pace all throughout. “At the Bottom” is a song that definitely wouldn’t feel out of place in an album like Music for the Masses or even Songs of Faith and Devotion; the Depeche Mode inspirations are very strong on this. And yet, Carlos can still make the most out of all of it and create something that feels and sounds truly like his very own style.
The atmosphere created by Carlos on “At the Bottom” perfectly matches the cryptic and surreal lyrics about love and connection sung beautifully with his low register and velvet-like vocals. There is such dynamism to be found on this arrangement, it’s impossible to listen to the track only once – such richness in details both in the production as well as in the vocal and lyrical content. At the same time, “At the Bottom” is probably the most accessible song ever released by Carlos, proving once and for all that he can do anything – from highly experimental to a perfect pop song and we’ll be here for all of it.
