Ell Freeman, a university neuroscientist by day, has boldly shifted his focus to pursue his lifelong passion for music composition and songwriting. Drawing inspiration from the iconic sounds of the 70’s and 90’s pop and rock, he has crafted a distinctive retro sound that captivates and stands out.

Delivering a dynamic blend of retro genres such as indie rock, pop, punk, soul-funk, ballads, and bossa nova, Ell ingeniously fuses these styles in surprising and innovative ways.

“Goodbye stranger is a song of regret and redemption, about a long-neglected relationship that is hopefully not too late to be rescued with renewed love and attention.”

About the single:

“Goodbye Stranger” was written during lockdown, as Freeman poured his focused energy into music creation. The song carries a poignant message of regret for not being there for his sons, presenting a story that can easily resonate with many.

“In writing this song and others around that time, I was learning that I could talk about personal topics in a poetic way, to convey deep emotions that may be familiar and relatable to listeners even though the actual events inspiring them are not revealed. But here is what it is really about:

During the Covid lock-down craziness, my son had a nasty argument with his mother and barricaded himself into the bathroom. I tried to talk to him through the closed door but he yelled at me to go away, furious with me for always being in my studio working on my music, rather than supporting him as a loving father should. I realised he was right, and wrote this song as an apology to him, and to reassure him that I was still there for him.”

This is the second release from Ell’s self-produced debut six-track EP ‘A Hard Place’, evoking feelings of guilt, hope, and redemption, all set to a richly layered production reminiscent of Britpop and Bowie-esque glam.

“Hopefully what listeners will take away from “Goodbye Stranger is a reminder that we should always make time to be present for the ones we love before it’s too late, or maybe to try to forgive those whom we wish could have been more present in our lives.” Ell Freeman

The song showcases beautiful guitar harmonies, alongside powerful drums and Freeman’s sincere vocal melodies. It also beautifully portrays a heartfelt conversation between a son and his father, skillfully drawing us into the story.

The chorus is fantastic, delivering the highest peak of emotion and taking a positive turn as we approach the final melodies. This song is a statement of the love between a father and his sons, and it hits all the notes Freeman intended.

So, give it a listen now!

“In my self-produced video I wander alone through desolate electronic landscapes sampled from a game (‘The Under Presents’ by Tenderclaws) on my son’s virtual reality headset, where we each spent a lot of our time.” – Ell Freeman

“Listeners tuning in for the first time will hear my rocky riffs, catchy hooks and singable choruses, but for full enjoyment they should be prepared to confront the honest frank emotions that the music is there to convey.” Ell Freeman
