Packetloss sounds relentless, urgent, and utterly inspired on their debut album “Reconnected”

Irish punk rock act Packetloss comes out swinging with debut album Reconnected, an impeccable follow up to their amazing string of singles and EPs that started late last year. Reconnected, a nice call back in title from their debut EP Disconnected, stands as a compilation of both of their previous EPs in full while also giving us new tracks that, pun intended, serve as a connection between their earlier work and where they are at now.

Full of dynamic changes in tempo and fast-paced drumming, the Reconnected album feels like a nostalgic hug as it boils down their entire ethos to their core. The Limerick-based trio recorded the album remotely between Scotland and Ireland, but you would never guess they’re not all together in the same room. Packetloss does an incredible job in giving more room to their versatility amidst punk rock simplicity and get their melodic sound to soar over new heights. Even the previously known tracks have a new dimension to them in the context of the album with great track placements.

The whole thing starts out with the stunner “Disconnected” just like on their first EP, and then quickly they segue into the new track “Escape” with ease. A powerful song dealing with struggles regarding anxiety and feelings of entrapment and homeboundness both physically and mentally, it’s a fiery explosion of melodic soundwaves that recall the early 90s punk scene and acts such as Ann Beretta and Lagwagon very nicely. As the tracks run by, it’s very easy to get glimpses of inspirations and influences like Green Day and blink-182 as well, as the band make their way into more complex and intricately woven rhythms from hard rock and grunge-like distortions.

The feelings of anxiety come up once more on the second new track we’ve got, “Restless”. A song that captures a claustrophobic sentiment of insomnia very well, while dealing with overwhelming emotions and making room for aggressive guitar riffs and melodic turns. Sprinkled across the tracklist like a chef giving their dish the final seasoning that will give it a proper punch, the band placed the new songs perfectly on this album. It’s very impressive how well Packetloss managed to build this narrative that repurposes and gives new life to their older tracks simply by adding new stuff in between them.

Even more impressive is the high levels of raw energy the band weaves through their endless twists and turns, always focused on emotional and vulnerable storytelling. Like a thread that ties the whole project together, their stories and lyrics sound even more compelling on Reconnected. Packetloss’s greatest triumph was always their ability to repurpose and stretch their indie punk sound into something greater, and they do it with organic naturality and impulsive urgency. This is still true of this album and even more so – and especially the closing combo of “Timed Out” and our last unheard song, “Drumming from the Shitter”.

Displaying incomparable energy and precision, the band created a record that shines with cohesion while still incorporating some experimentation. It’s punk rock enough to please the oldschool crowd with undeniable hooks and catchy guitar riffs, and new and interesting enough to keep you thinking about the lyrics and production choices long after it’s already done. Reconnected by Packetloss is an album that sounds like a nostalgic experiment, one that firmly roots itself on past sounds and grows from there to unexpected directions, blossoming high above a landscape of more of the same that permeates most punk rock today.
