The Northern Light’s historical and political new single “People of the Snake”

The Northern Light band

Led by songwriter and vocalist David Pollon, the Seattle-based indie rock trio The Northern Light is just back with “People of the Snake”. Their brand-new single is the first track released by the band since their self-titled debut album last year, and it really shows the boys honing in on their 90s indie rock influences harder than ever before.

The track is guided by a guitar riff that is heavily influenced by J Mascis’s unmistakable style of melodic distortion, instantly creating an atmosphere of nostalgic bliss. “People of the Snake” relies on social commentary and storytelling, being inspired by real-life events from the 1860s, turning it into a powerful anthem for the population rising up against oppression. The Northern Light did an amazing job writing from that perspective, as it shows that we are still facing most of the same issues up until today.

Telling that story through such lenses highlights just how far we’ve come as a society, at the same time that there is still so much that stays the same. Fighting oppression and demanding liberation is an universal feeling that transcends eras and ages, and that feeling remains unchanged throughout human history. “People of the Snake” unveils itself as the soundtrack for said liberation, relating to the same frustration and anger that was present in the 1860s and bringing it to modern day as the fuel that could inspire yet another revolution.

The first taste from their next project comes off as a strong and powerful statement, “dedicated to a population that have been forgotten in the name of progress”. The sonics used by the band show artistic growth as they continue their perfect blend of classic rock from the 70s and 90s with dashes of psychedelia and contemporary singer-songwriter dynamics.

It’s a breathtaking track, that never shies away from its political undertones while still finding room to breathe and bask in the distortion. “People of the Snake” is a song that shows The Northern Light pushing forward and looking inward, creating something that stands the test of time and sounds like a band diving deep into their own influences in the most magnificent way.
