Seattle-based alternative rock trio The Northern Light is ready to kick off their 2025 season with brand new track “Secrets”. The song comes shortly after their memorable “People of the Snake” from last DECEMBER AND shows the band mixing their iconic 90s rock with classic stylings in the form of Neil Young influences.

Creating an ambiance that wouldn’t feel out of place in the Midwest emo scene, The Northern Light comes forth more melody-driven than ever. On “Secrets” the trio led by singer and guitarist David Pollon crafts a melancholic scene inspired by a trip to Ontario, Canada, going through moments of self-reflection. The track is an intimate journey through memories and stories, highlighting the band’s ability to portray true and raw emotions rooted in storytelling and melodic twists.
The decision to engage with atmospheric and slow burning build up shows the band through a new light. With compelling moods that feel like were left to simmer, the band constructs on “Secrets” a track that sounds intricately put together with maturity and grace. The song showcases the band’s knack for complex storytelling by unveiling the stories of people through their memories and marks left on physical places, and does an astounding job of weaving them into their own.
Their usage of J Mascis-inspired guitar sounds feel poignant and delicate like a bomb that hasn’t been set off yet – focusing instead on the tension it represents rather than the explosion itself. The Northern Light possesses the uncanny skill of sounding like an amalgamation of every one of their influences, from the aforementioned Dinosaur Jr to the prog rock dynamics of RUSH, and they do it with sensible grace. “Secrets” is a track that shows all of this happening at once, creating powerful moments of wounded intimacy, and beautifully laying the ground for what else is to come from them across the rest of the year.
