The Cunning Linguists debut single “Burn the Swastika” is a powerful political statement that will never get old

THE CUNNING LINGUISTS IS A BRAND-NEW PROJECT LED BY Clare Easdown ALONGSIDE HER GIRLFRIEND JADE RAYN. CLARE is an Australian artist who’s made her name around the electronic music genres, tackling important issues like mental health and depression through often ambient-inspired music. THE DEBUT SINGLE BY THIS NEW PUNK BAND “Burn the Swastika” is about as subtle as a trainwreck, in true punk rock fashion.

The first glimpses we got from this side of Clare’s music came last year with the fiery “Rebel Hearts“, whose music video starred Jade performing tricks on a skateboard. As The Cunning Linguists, the two share vocal duties with Jade handling their lyrics as Clare takes on the production and engineering roles, creating a fast-paced and passionate plea with a pertinent politically charged message.

The apty-titled “Burn the Swastika” is as in-your-face as it gets, making its point through extremely vivid imagery and becoming an excellent anti-nazi anthem. With the rise of fascism and neo-nazi movements amongst other far-right organizations taking over the world and finding themselves even elected to government positions, fighting back has become more important than ever – especially for the queer community and people of color. That is exactly what their debut single as The Cunning Linguists is all about: resistance against oppression, turning your voice as loud as it can get and spreading a message of hope in this dire global situation.

“Burn the Swastika” hits the ground running and rummages through one-and-a-half minutes of burning frustration, taking inspiration from seminal acts like Amyl and the Sniffers, Bikini Kill and punk legends X-Ray Spex. It’s a track that feels like an attitude-driven cri du cœur that holds nothing back and it’s unapologetic on its delivery, as it should be. The song comes alongside a music video that is filled with psychedelic overlaps of the girls performing that feels extremely iconoclastic, bringing their simple-but-effective chorus of ‘burn the swastika and kill the nazis‘ to the forefront.

The forming of The Cunning Linguists is a very exciting turn for Clare’s music, and this debut single marks their collaboration as a very promising one. Inspired by a neo-nazi march that took place on their native “Australia Day”, the girls decided to speak up against it with an infecctious and incredibly melodic punk track that measures no words to show their dissatisfaction.

It’s a powerful statement piece that feels extremely necessary in today’s political world. The need for an anti-nazi song like this should already be a thing of the past by this point, but as long as these things are happening we will be here to fight it – doesn’t matter if it’s 1945 or 2025.
