German electronic music producer legend Luke Tangerine is back with brand new EP Midnight Sketches, veering off into brand new sounds as well. The eclectic artist from Frankfurt has already proven himself across several different genres, ranging from new wave EDM disco to post-punk, and now he’s once again trying out different skins as a producer.
Midnight Sketches is a laid-back EP that is still full of energy and dancefloor-ready bangers like much of Luke’s work. But this time around, the musician seems to slow down a bit and go for a mellower sound that is totally influenced by brazilian popular music, both contemporary as well as bossa nova classics. The summery EP is an intriguing entry to Luke’s discography, as it is the first time that acoustic instruments and beachy melodies take the centre stage. It’s a short, four-track ride into uncharted territories for Luke, and needless to say he absolutely takes that steering wheel and guides the ship towards something wonderful.
On opener “Ticket to Belo Horizonte”, which references the lovely capitol of Minas Gerais state, Luke sets the mood instantly and creates a track that gently throws you into this universe. Filled with electronic beats and rich instrumentations that culminate into a samba, it’s a very interesting track that sounds unlike most. Featuring portuguese spoken word lyrics that mention how an unnamed character was invited to go there and, with excitement, accepts the invitation, it unveils as an oddly ode to how wonderful the city in itself is. Which is true, but not something that frequently appears regarding places other than Rio de Janeiro in worldly songs.
From there on in, Luke expands his tropical influences and crafts slow-tempo ballads with gorgeous horn sections like on “Coffee Break with Jaco”. The German artist also tirelessly blends in jazz and R&B to his newly explored sonic landscape, illustrated beautifully on “Shine”. The track beams with retro melodies and uplifting lyrics that make you forget any problems and just give yourself to the music and dance. Luke Tangerine carefully crafts a detailed love letter to Brazilian music on this EP, encircling a myriad of different styles and influences into a cohesive collection that celebrates how rich and tasteful Brazil’s music is.
Closer “Unfinished Self Portrait” stands out as an introspective ballad, the kind of track that you find yourself listening to on headphones by yourself. Either walking at the beach at sunset or on your own returning from the club, the song bleeds into a soft atmosphere of hopeful longing. It’s breath-taking and a very human reminder of emotional turmoil’s but instead making themselves into solutions rather than the problems.
A true innovator in the contemporary electronic music realm, Luke Tangerine created an EP that defies everything we’ve previously heard from him. It’s a bold step into a new direction of sun-bleached melodies intertwined with ever-expanding instrumentations. The four tracks that compose Midnight Sketches sound like anything but drafts, highlighting how rich and interesting music can be if we just allow ourselves to get rid of genre boundaries and formats. Midnight Sketches is a fearless testament of creativity that manages to feel intimate and universal at once by bringing in unlikely influences and making them the centrefold.
