Ray Joyce is a prolific artist from Bournemouth, England. Influenced by Frank Black, Guided by Voices, and The Strokes, he writes, performs, and records all of his music in the depths of his basement studio.
He’s celebrated for his distinct and insightful songwriting, marked by a classic, vintage sound—almost lo-fi. In this new release, he beautifully showcases his authenticity, creating a singular atmosphere that’s rarely found.
“Indistinct Shape” offers a warm and crisp sound. You can definitely hear The Stroke’s influence, but Joyce’s unique essence is undeniable. It is really outstanding what he achieves by not wanting to sound perfect but instead create a musical scenery that compliments the song so well.
Lyrically, the song delves into the depths of intense emotions sparked by abstract thoughts and images, such as nostalgia and lust. In here, Joyce wonders about how the causes of the most intense feelings are often hard to define, such as nostalgia and desire.
The singer suggests that he would give it all up for someone or something he can’t even properly understand.
It really is an abstract but compelling thought, one that adds a lot of coherence to the construction of the track as a whole. The unique vibe, the vintage sound, the lo-fi atmosphere; it all comes together with its meticulous and personal lyricism.
One could compare the instrumentation to that such of the Indie genre, but many times we can hear sloppy playing in songs of such style. In this release, every instrument is played perfectly, with every harmony, every riff, and every beat truly complementing each other, never breaking the magic spell.
