Valentines Day is coming up with a gift from Three Small Giants, namely a cover single for Horace Silver’s “Doodlin’”. What’s wrapped inside is a whole lot of groove topped off with easy-going charm, the sort that’s immune to problems from the outside. So while everyone else keeps on running about, Three Small Giants keep on doodlin’ away.
Mellow melodies with a softly muted effect build up a velvety atmosphere, a comfortably set up stage of a room with all the nice things. Inside, a charming vocal shines with a twinge of humor and a healthy dose of carefree nature. The favourite little things for this voice is a pencil and any available paper, and the least desired ones are people getting into her personal business. But even if there is a clash, these people will soon discover that their efforts just get doodled down along with everything else.
This cheerful tune will be the final song of “As Silent as Dawn Came – Extended 2025”, an album with 14 tracks of absolutely smooth sophistication. Here, velvet suits and sparkly vocals fill the room, and the upright bass warms up the air with its deep melodies. Spacious, timeless, and tight with no loose notes anywhere, the album showcases the sheer artistic skill of making something both familiar and highly refreshing.

Part of the charm is in the sensed simplicity, smooth and pleasant, and hiding the fact this is a result of hard work and splendid timing. Stories presented by the confident vocals are also simple in a way, but told through a humorous viewpoint, honesty married with boldness of someone with experience. Be it a story of something akin a fleeting relationship (Norwegian Wood), confidence on the verge of delusion, though not perceived as such (Twisted) or a slow-paced ballad on the still-so-dear shards of what once was (Breathing Freely), the album has lots to offer for an attentive mind. Pay attention, this is no background record.
Three Small Giants is a trio of exceptionally skilled artists keen on bringing sophisticated jazz ideas together with an engaging cross-genre blend of ingenuity both in the studio and on stage. What would otherwise remain out of reach for the average listener, who isn’t perhaps too keen on how lengthy jazz pieces can be, will be handpicked and compiled into something fresh and captivating. One of the members is also familiar to blog readers – the band’s vocalist Karina Kampe, who released her solo single “There’s a Page Torn Out of the Book” late last year.
