Formed by three highly accomplished musicians and producers, Made Of Sand is composed of the exceptional talents of Dan Rolfe, Matthew Davis, and Lithuanian vocalist Aaron Fross. Fun fact, Fross’ grandfather was the founder of the biggest pagan community in Lithuania!
Matthew was formerly signed to EMI and has co-written with Grammy Award winner Daisy Chute and Stuart Moxham from the iconic band Young Marble Giants. Dan also releases electronic tracks under the alias ‘Lupic’ – as well as designing the band’s artwork.
“Based On A Novel” follows their debut single Come Find Me, expertly fusing ‘90s trip hop with the vibrant elements of electronica, indie pop, and shoegaze. Drawing inspiration from iconic acts like Massive Attack, Morcheeba, The Cure, and, undeniably, The Beatles, they have forged a sound that is not just interesting but effortlessly captivating.
Fross’ voice is undoubtedly the highlight of the song. Her soft and enchanting style, with ease, calms anyone who listens. It’s impossible not to draw parallels between her tone and Enya’s, as she presents each word and syllable with undeniable grace.
Lyrics were masterfully penned by Matthew, inspired while watching ‘Handmaid’s Tale.’ As he absorbed the credits declaring ‘based on the novel by…,’ a brilliant idea struck him: a powerful narrative of a woman ensnared in a dystopian nightmare, stripped of the ability to write her own story.
The instrumental boasts a professional and pristine sound, expertly brought into focus by producer/DJ @mauoq, who recently remixed Peter Gabriel. It feels as if Trip-Hop has always been present, continuously evolving to resonate with the modern era.
Listening to this track is such a treat, a rush of nostalgia mixed with the wonder of a modern sound. “Based On A Novel” is really a must listen, and one of the best songs released this year so far.
