English indie folk singer, songwriter and producer S J Denney comes back with new single “Weather the Storm”, a track unlike anything he’s ever released this far. Following the autobiographical Happy Ever After EP from late last year, the Suffolk-based musician is ready to start something entirely anew. His latest single “Weather the Storm” sees the artist going down the 90s alternative rock path, drawing influences from grunge and stoner rock.
It’s not something we’ve heard coming from S J Denney before, but he fits the role incredibly well. “The first thing I recorded was a drum track in the style of Dave Grohl. I wanted it to sound like something from In Utero“, the artist says about the thought process behind the track. Taking cues from Butch Vig and Steve Albini’s production styles, Denney stepped out of his comfort zone and dove head first into a full-blown guitar sound.
Fully written and produced by Denney himself, “Weather the Storm” is a song about endurance and resistance sung through a new perspective. With lyrics that speak of uncertainty and how one manages to power through tough times, it remains an S J Denney track at heart. It’s a bold step to take, and it works because of how easy the artist makes this turn feel like. “Weather the Storm” is a stunning song that highlights Denney’s abilities as a songwriter and producer even more than before.

“Weather the Storm” shows the artist fully committing to something new for him, it’s a very much welcomed experiment that manages to blend grunge musings with his usual heartfelt lyrics and emotional content. An astonishing track that offers heavy guitar riffs flowing alongside an adventurous horn section, “Weather the Storm” takes inspiration from the 90s scene, but it does not stay there. S J Denney did a wonderful job trying out a new style, right up to an ominously somber vocal performance, creating a track that feels fresh and intriguing while never compromising in any way his artistic vision.
It takes courage to try anything new, and Denney sounds like a brave explorer willing to go all the way no matter what. His take on 90s alternative rock is deeply interesting, shining a brand-new light into a whole subgenre. I would love to hear what else he can do with more inspiration from Alice in Chains and Stone Temple Pilots going forward.
