AJ Montague is an UP-AND-COMING pop singer and songwriter from England, working under the guise of Esore Alle. The artist was brought up on a healthy dose of art pop, ranging from Bowie and Bush to Mika and Scissor Sisters, and all that flare is deeply present on his music. “I Never Knew What I Wanted” is his debut single and it already shows a FULLY FORMED vision that feels exciting and intriguing.
Co-written alongside his friend and collaborator Cat Jones, the track is vivid and shoots up higher than most conventional pop does lately. Offering a lively mix of heavy trauma and storytelling on his unconventional lyricism, the song deals with sexual violence and the ramifications of not realising how bad everything was until years later. On “I Never Knew What I Wanted”, the artist takes bold steps in telling his story and sharing his trauma as a way of healing, and he does it over peppy instrumentals and quick-paced melodies.
“I Never Knew What I Wanted” explores a forgotten soundscape, making it with ease, refreshing, and interesting. Borrowing elements from 70s glam rock, mid-2000s British indie pop and an intrinsically queer attitude, it’s a track that sounds even more twisted than any of Montreal song. On his debut single, Esore Alle does an incredible job keeping things light and fun even while rummaging through heartbreaking lyrics with brutal honesty and tongue-in-cheek humor that constantly straddles between satire and seriousness.
“This song was a hard song to write but I felt it was important not only for me to get my feelings across in a healthy way but to also help others deal with their feelings whilst shaking their asses at the same time“, the artist says about the song with earnest sincerity. It’s a fascinating experience as the song takes you on a true journey through childhood trauma and the coping mechanisms that follow on adult life. It’s a poignant track that definitely feels like the most daring step one could take on their debut single – but Esore Alle isn’t an artist like the rest, pulling it off with adventurous dignity.
