All the way from Petersfield in Hempshire, England, Mark Vennis and his band Different Place is gearing up for a re-release of their latest Sunrise EP from late last year. The highly political landscape of the EP gets its first physical release on vinyl as an expanded edition, offering a brand new track and a handful of remixes and interesting new versions that make the EP get a full-length treatment.

Vinyl Sunrise serves as a continuation of the main project, with each remix being hand-picked to enhance the experience. Here we also find “Sure Ain’t No Crime”, originally the b-side found on “In These Times…” single, a track that sees the band getting back to their Small Town Vampire roots with acoustic guitars and thrilling cinematic. Closing track “Solid Ground” appears in both acoustic form as well as the expansive “Escape Remix”, which transforms the track into an intriguing synthpop reggae experiment that makes its message of environmental collapse hit in a completely different way.
Also present is a widescreen version of the EP’s opener “Song for Sunrise” that sounds clearer and more urgent, adding a compelling new dynamic to one of the EP’s highlights. But the true star of Vinyl Sunrise comes in the form of the brand new track “All the Years”, in both original and a remixed rendition.

“All the Years” shows the post-punk band navigating through their influences with a fresh perspective and adding nice touches to their gritty sound. The song was inspired by Gang of Four’s classic dynamics and also features a reggae-influenced bassline that creates a nice contrast between the heavy guitars and cynical lyricism about betrayal and History. The remix is also a notable one, changing the track into a dub-heavy post-gothic darkwave masterpiece with haunting echoes that truly live up to Mark Vennis’s aesthetic of a ‘punk sound that grew up’.
Pressed by their label Laundry Records and made available through Elastic Stage, the new Sunrise sounds and feels like an entirely new listening experience, relying on the band’s strength and political undertones as well as exciting new musical ventures. It’s a compilation of the best of their unique take on post-punk alongside interesting remixes and renditions, both old and brand-new. It breathes modern life and weight into what was their most mature release yet, perfectly illustrating that the band has so much more to show and they know how to stay true to themselves while creating thrilling new concepts.
