Australian powerhouse electronic music guru Clare Easdown just released her latest single “In Candlelight”. Following some experimental work that went from raw punk to atmospheric new wave, Clare dives back deep into ambient sounds and ethereal textures on her new track. Inspired by powerful anti-war alternative music made from the likes of The Cranberries and PJ Harvey, the Menai-based artist creates a haunting song that is ghostly and bleak but still somewhat hopeful.
The artist uses the metaphor of a flickering candle to portray its message of persistence, even if fragile, making “In Candlelight” evoke incredibly emotional responses from listeners. On her latest effort, Clare fuses trip-hop dynamics with vulnerable lyricism and rich textures that are both soothing and confrontational. Backed by impactful and blissful instrumentals and chant-like vocal melodies, Clare crafted a soundtrack for resilience, as if it were the new age cinematics of Enya’s Watermark.

“[The track] can be framed as a fusion of urgent global awareness and deeply personal conviction”, the artist shares before elaborating further: “The seed for “In Candlelight” was planted in the shadow of endless news reports – graphic videos on TikTok, families fleeing war zones, children caught in the crossfire. From Ukraine to Gaza, Sudan to Yemen, the list of active conflicts felt overwhelming, yet the world seemed to scroll past them in silence”, she sadly laments as perfectly illustrated by its performative unreleased lyric video.

In a call to action that appeals to the real heartbreaking humanity that is always lost in a war, “In Candlelight” soars as a beacon of recognition and hope amongst the vast landscape of everyday muted destruction. And it manages to do so while overflowing with empathy and compassion, especially those right in the middle of it.
