de antiquis et novis is the German electronic music producer and composer Matthias Schorer, is back with his latest full-length project Elements, a concept album that follows 2023’s Dance! and a few stand alone singles since then. Inspired by ambient legends like Tangerine Dream and Jean Michael Jarre, Elements is a powerful display of subtlety and texture that gives Elise’s soft vocals an even more angelical tone.

Elements is comprised of mainly four songs, aptly titled “Earth”, “Water”, “Air”, and “Fire”. The ambient compositions embody each of their own names with relentless determination, creating sounds that are carefully textured to resemble their inspirations. “Earth” consists of tribal chants and percussion that feel ethereal alongside dreamy synths and propulsive pacing, making it an impressive and breathtaking seven-minute-long journey across the dirt and the sky.
After such a strong opening, Elements thrives with narratives of life and philosphy as well as the relationships between nature, science and humanity. The new record from the famed German musician stands out as an otherworldy experience that still feels ultimately rooted on actual ground.
Across rising oceans of electronics, dripping sounds, and haunting vocals, “Water” floods the landscape with gentle melodies and soothing atmospheres. Its lyrical and sonic themes deal with the never-ending cycle of life itself, much like Björk’s Medúlla did in its time.
The album closes with the cheery and energetic “Air”, with purposefully encouraging melodies and joy-inducing rhythms. It’s the lighter and brighter moment of the record, a gorgeous instrumental piece that feels like an unapologetic celebration of life. This is flawlessly followed by the smoky vocals of “Fire” and warmth lyricism about how the element brings heat and light, essential to life. With a certain wiccan charm, Elements ends its run with the kind of melancholic optimism that comes with being alive – only for it to start again.
