DayEyez is the AI-assisted musical project of Shaun Dayman, based on New Zealand, that just released debut album Mid Love Crisis. The record is a culmination of many things explored by DayEyez over singles such as “Cast Away” and “Grave“, offering a hard and bold look into relationships and why they mostly fail. However Mid Love Crisis triumphs in exploring those topics through lenses of learning and empathy, avoiding pessimistic tropes and clichés for the most part.

Inspired by early 2000s emo and the more melodramatic parts of nu-metal, Mid Love Crisis is a sensitive and thoughtful portrayal of modern dynamics with cinematic pacing. The tracks seamlessly bleed into one another, giving the project a sense of intimacy and cohesion that goes beyond usual standards. It’s a record that challenges and contradicts itself frequently, wandering around genres and influences with curiosity. Going as far back as 1970s with Queen and Bowie ambiances being sewn side by side with My Chemical Romance and Imagine Dragons, Mid Love Crisis is a remarkable achievement.
It’s a deeply intentional album that moves swiftly and precisely, slowing down when necessary – either to prove a point or to give itself a breathing room. But those moments are far from fillers and end up revealing themselves as crowning pieces such as “Mine“, a reflection on time itself. DayEyez proves to fully understand what it is that makes those emo records from 2004 feel like all-time classics: it’s not the overt sadness, but the raw emotional delivery – and that is overflowing on these tracks.

Built as a well-thought out concept, Mid Love Crisis touches on themes of grief, guilt and the sheer bliss of being able to get through something hard with cathartic conclusions that not always equal to resolutions. It’s the kind of record that asks more questions than it’s able to answer, but it never leaves you frustrated with what it withholds. Instead, it focuses on novelty and keeps banging out new ideas – some better explored than others, but always making things feel fresh and intriguing. Whatever information is kept from the audience makes it seem more mysterious and compelling with every new listen.
Mid Love Crisis, like its title suggests, is the portrait of an identity crisis. Its conflicting themes and patterns revolve around each other just as orderly as our own thoughts, creating an unmistakable sense of realism and urgency that is rarely captured. It claims to only be about love, but the reality is that it’s an album that covers a wide range of relationships and how they end – it can be as smooth as a friendly breakup, just as real as it can be as abrupt and sudden as death. No matter the circumstances, Mid Love Crisis has you covered with the right sensibility for each stage of grief from now on.
