English musician and producer Mark Vennis is about to unveil his brand new song “The Beating of the Drum” with his full-band project Mark Vennis & Different Place, following the release of successful albums and EPs over the years. On their first slice of new music since “Solid Ground” a few months ago, the band seems well-rested and revitalized with a great new approach to their unique brand of post-punk and new wave and it’s absolutely beautiful.

Offering a stunning and well-balanced agglutination of influences from 70s and 80s classics like The Clash and Paul Weller’s post-The Jam work, “The Beating of the Drum” is a refreshing and propelling single that stands as a new direction for the band and a very welcomed one. The track’s tight production does not dwell in excess at any point, instead focusing on the same organic and DIY aesthetic Mark’s excelled at previously. There is a lovely lo-fi charm to “The Beating of the Drum” and its melody-driven groove, making it a stand out on the artist’s discography and paving the way for exciting new grounds.
“The Beating of the Drum” is the first taste of their upcoming album Goodbye to All That, made up of politically charged lyrics that fall well into its punk roots. The artist comments on how the track is “about the relentless push to divide us, fall behind the flag, and get us to march blindly into wars. In a world that is becoming more and more dominated by nationalism and nativism, we are always the ones who pay”, and it goes hard on this concept with a great sense of unity made even more clear by its overlapping vocals.

“The Beating of the Drum” is a shining example of Mark Vennis’s work at its best while also testing out new production ideas and pacing. On their new single the band’s chemistry and synergy sound airtight and overflowing with camaraderie at every beat. The choice to make it more stripped back than the soundscape of their Sunrise EP gives the track the sense of trusted intimacy found in a jam session amongst friends, bringing its core message much closer to the audience in a way that makes you feel like you’re a part of it giving you a reason to care.
Mark Vennis’s new track does an excellent job in making you question why things have to be the way they are while offering a safe and comforting place for those ponderings to even exist in the first place, feeling like a spiritual successor to The Clash’s Sandinista!. It’s a brilliant move for such an important song about social and community issues, revealing the power that art can have on our political landscape. A song of resistance doubled down as a call to action for change, “The Beating of the Drum” relies on empathy and understanding at the same time that it ferociously criticizes the status quo in the way only Mark Vennis could.
