New York-based weird pop and avant-garde act Energy Whores unleashes Arsenal of Democracy, a new record that fully encapsulates their unique artistic vision and core values. Fronted by pianist and vocalist Carrie Schoenfield and backed by Attilo Valenti, Energy Whores have slowly but very surely captivating audiences with a very particular brand of electronic music that is both catchy as it is thought-provoking.
Filled by experimental takes, punk attitude, and left-leaning politics, Arsenal of Democracy straddles between social commentary and cathartic release in a void. Their music touches on pertinent contemporary topics like the toxicity of celebrity culture, our collective desensitization of hate, and the vapidness of digital interactions with the subtlety of a knife being twisted in. Even amongst all of this, Arsenal of Democracy reveals itself as a deeply courageous and empathetic record – the only reason these tracks sting is because Carrie and Attilo expect that the world and its people to be better than this. So when that doesn’t happen, maybe pointing out the flaws can help the next generation to actually do better.
There is urgency in the subject matter and in the electronic beats, but there’s very little aggression on the music itself. Carrie sounds soft most of the time, almost as if her nonchalantness hits even harder than guttural screams. It’s a record that shares the same universe that Le Tigre’s debut with considerable less overt anger. This paves the way for the lyrics feel even more self-reflective, forcing us to face the society around is through an uncomfortable perspective: these are all our lived experiences.
From songs that deal with surveillance culture, the uprising of AI, and the dread of misinformation, Arseal of Democracy is a realization that this is our reality. And it brings fairly unique kinds of sadness and frustration that we so often choose to overlook in our day-to-day lives. Arsenal of Democracy confronts those topics not as abstract ideas but as a part of ourselves, even when we really wish it weren’t the case. The apocalyptic and dystopian energy of the record is present in the music as much as it is in the lyrics, offering a wide range of experimental sounds and surprisingly melodic tracks.

Arsenal of Democracy is a dadaist record that seamlessly blends together organic instruments with popforward electronics, crafting atmospheres that feel futuristic, breathless and, at times, even tender. “Two Minutes to Midnight” is centered around the knowledge of preparing for a nuclear holocaust, but is delivered softly with Lana Del Rey-like production. Carrie sounds accepting and serene as she focus on the fragility of humanity and how easily we could extinct ourselves. On the other side we’ve got the groovy “King Orange” that feels like a Talking Heads outtake, and that dynamic range is amazing in itself.
“I make music to expose what others try to bury, injustice, greed, hypocrisy, and the emotional fallout of a broken world”, Carrie says. This is even more evident in the video for the title track “Arsenal of Democracy”, just released. It’s a surrealist exploration of doomsday scenarios that relies on humor just as it takes itself as seriously as it should. It’s a call to action made clear by shots of protest signs, purposely bad AI, and harsh criticism of governmental decisions, big corporations, and their impact on our daily lives. “I don’t write love songs. I write warning signs”, Carrie concludes.
Energy Whores’ first proper album is truly made of warning signs: society is collapsing, we’re on the verge of an unprecedented breakdown and all we care about is asking AI bots what to make for dinner. Arsenal of Democracy is a plea for us to start thinking critically again, to look around and realize that things aren’t right, and the more we do nothing about it, the harder it will be to climb back from the abyss. It’s a dire record that doesn’t offer comforting solutions but holds a mirror to the rotten parts of life in the hopes that at least someone will be aware of how fast we’re going down.
