Back in late last year, English DJ and producer Luke Michael Kane released his album PSYCHEDELIKA under his project The New Citizen Kane, a dance-forward that showed remarkable vulnerability and a wide range of sounds. Now he brings that vulnerability front and center on latest record PSYCHEDELIKA (STRIPPED), a rendition of the album that is done entirely through acoustic textures and allow his compositions and vocal performance to shine more than ever before.
The record features gorgeous new arrangements for nine of its original tracks, including highlight single “I Don’t Need to Say“, as well as two new songs that offer a glimpse of what is to come on PSYCHEDELIKA Pt. 2. On these new versions the artist continues to impress with creative production choices, doing way more than simply rerecording instrumentals. The massive single “Subconscious” now incorporates elements from bossa nova and Latin inspirations on its rhythms and delivers its personal lyricism with considerably more weight to it, resulting in an experience that feels like a completely different track.
The project takes interesting steps backwards and reveals itself as something more than reworking his previous songs, as Kane himself explains. “It’s about remembering where they began. Before synths, visuals, or layers – just lyrics, melody, and feeling.” That gentle and intimate approach to the tracks makes them even more tangible and does wonders in accentuating Kane’s personal lyricism and careful construction of the songs from start to finish. “My Muse”, the self-declared first song Kane wrote after coming back to music after ten years, hits even harder on its stripped version – you feel the ache and catharsis of creating something he believes in so much more vividly.

PSYCHEDELIKA (STRIPPED) also impresses with the new tracks that offer new perspectives to his own sound, seen most clearly on the brazilian-tinged “Baile de Máscaras”. Just like last record’s “Afterglow”, the song features a mixture of English and Portuguese lyrics and proves that the englishman can write a samba-inspired track that feels reminiscent of local acts like Ana Carolina with remarkable ease. The song is centered around emotional avoidance and speaking your truth, using a masquerade ball as a way to convey the push and pull between performance and honesty.
Rooted in craft and chipping away any excesses or flourishes, the latest record from Kane does an excellent job in finding a healthy balance in itself. It can go from softly spoken and tender moments of raw vulnerability (“Bite the Bullet”) to high-energy dance tracks that sound refreshing and interesting with acoustic textures like on “Well, Damn! Here You Are”. It’s a record that completely reframes Kane’s own relationship with music as an art form, and finds the Englishman at his most freeing, organic, and creative yet and proves himself as an artist capable of doing both electronic beats just as well as acoustic-led moments of self-reflection and introspection.
