Monroe Moon “War”

#nowar. As simple as that. There’s enough suffering already, just stop.

Monroe Moon is back with an anti-war anthem. The duo consisting of married couple vocalist Bunny Monroe and guitarist Theo Monroe, have already been on the blog introducing their sweet, dark and atmospheric sound with singles “Wishing Well” and “Greener“. Sparkling with a sheen of nocturnal life, the two create beautiful emotive indie rock music that’s free-flowing, imaginative, layered and vivid. While some of the duo’s music walks the romantic and gentle path, the two are also fearlessly tackling much more actual topics, and their newest song is one of them.

Written in 2021 as a response to the US military conflicts around the world, the song titled “WAR” has unfortunately gained a whole new level of actuality today with what’s going on in Ukraine. Its sound of world free of fighting, blood-shedding and suffering grows especially dear to the soul now, with the warbling synthline that starts the song and introduces sweet falling guitar harmonies. It’s an anti-war anthem with a sound that acts as a bit of a painkiller, a really much-needed one at that, while the lyrics speak what’s on the artist’s mind with clean simplicity. To contrast with the generally vibrant instrumental side, the song also incorporates swooping sounds that always freeze me fully alert – it sounds exactly like a distorted reverbed sound of a distant bomb alert horn.

The vibrancy of this single’s instrumental side together with her vocals make the song really captivating and smooth for its anti-war theme – instead of curdling your blood with graphic imagery, “WAR” seeks to get its message delivered through much more direct road to a wretched soul seeking for something to ease the pain. Seeing how many of those souls are around now, this song has most definitely become a much-needed one to embrace with both its message and its sound.
