The Margaret Hooligans’ bittersweet love song “Hey Love”

The Margaret Hooligans returns with a new single that stands apart from their previous releases. Somewhat of a romantic love song, “Hey Love” is infused with psychedelic, fuzzy ukulele vibes, and their usual top-notch, rock and roll drumming.

What’s going on ladies and gentlemen, welcome back! It’s a’ me, MadZen, and today I’m actually surprised by today’s single. Not what you’d expect from The Margaret Hoolignas’ song, but I totally dig it. But that’s the beauty of versatility, making an unexpected impact on the listener, and part of what makes a band/artist good. Let’s get to it!

After releasing their previous single Doggie Pizza Crust, The Margaret Hooligans continue to lay the path for their upcoming third album, “Saturday Night in Bartertown”. The American duo created by Meg Cratty and Mr. Strontium continues to give something to talk about in every new release, and this one won’t be the exception.

It is a bittersweet love song, exploring the death of a relationship, using the metaphor of an astronaut launching himself into space and leaving his loved ones behind as a way of talking about the distance growing between him and his lover.

“Hey Love” is their second single from Saturday “Night in Bartertown”, and far from the tongue-in-cheek attitude that you’d expect, Meg and Strontium now delight us with, dare I say, a more serious approach to songwriting. Now, this doesn’t mean they’ve at all lost their defining sound but have more likely expanded it.

The song is told from the perspective of the lover, wondering if he will remember her as he drifts further away. It has an eerie, ethereal feel, full of psychedelic electric ukulele solos, fuzzed out rhythm uke, crooning vocals, and a steady syncopated beat to drive it all.” – TMH

Soothing and exciting at the same time, “Hey Love” rewards the keen listener. Strontium’s drumming is at its finest, and Meg’s vocals deliver a profound and clean performance. The sound of the electric ukulele is heavily distorted, which makes one wonder “how the hell did they come up with that?”. Either way, it is a pretty interesting tone and a tune that evolves from a syncopated beat to a psychedelic explosion of nasty riffs and dirty cymbals. Enough talking,
