From Switzerland and currently based in London, Mina is a very talented vocalist that can turn anything into a beautiful and soulful masterpiece. This is exactly the case with her latest single, a cover of “Lucky” – a classic from Britney Spears’s second album Oops!… I Did It Again. And it’s unlike any other take on this song you’ve heard before.

“Lucky” also marks the third and final collaboration between the artist and English neo-soul pianist Nathan Britton, after the gorgeous original ballads “Don’t Hold On” and “The One That Got Away“. On this cover, the pair continues their brilliant synergy of soul and R&B-inspired sounds, with slick production and lush vocals from Mina. There’s an intrinsic sadness to Mina’s singing style, and it fits this particular song very well, adding an extra layer of bittersweetness to an already emotional song.
She sounds incredibly at home singing this, making the song her own from the very first second. As she sings: ‘If there’s nothing missing in my life, then why do these tears come out at night?‘ at the end of the chorus, we’re already hooked and immersed in the same journey of feelings as the girl from the lyrics.
The themes around the song, of isolation, vulnerability, and frustration even though it’s an apparent perfect life, fit Mina’s own brand of bittersweet very well. She didn’t write this song, but it falls into place so perfectly beside her other two singles that she might as well have written it herself. It just goes to show that Mina is just as good as a performer as she is a songwriter and there’s nothing she can’t do – and nothing she can’t make us feel.
