The Library Is On Fire outstanding return “Hotel Jugoslavija”

After a 9 year hiatus, Brooklyn band The Library Is On Fire returns with “Hotel Jugoslavia”, the second single of their 2023 comeback featuring the legendary Mike Watt (Minutemen, Iggy and The Stooges, Dos, Sonic Youth). Out now!

What’s going on ladies and gentlemen, welcome back! It’s your boy MadZen and today we have an outstanding return by one of Brooklyn’s most celebrated DIY Indie Rock bands from the 00’s. A track that’s aggressive, melodic, and with the awesome participation of Mr. Mike Watt, the legendary bass player.

The Library Is On Fire was created by singer/guitarist Steve Five in 2007 (no relation to John Five). They created a sound that combined the melodies of Guided by Voices and the guitar wall of Dinosaur Jr, which quickly made them scene favorites and known for their chaotic live shows at venues such as Glasslands and Death By Audio. In 2014 the band went into a hiatus, and it wasn’t until this year that they announced their return with the single “Back Pocket”, and now “Hotel Jugoslavija”.

The single is quite frantic, to say the least, with a wild drum performance that shakes the foundation of the very track. Grunge and rock united together to create a unique sound that’s both heavy and melodic. The militancy of the verses heavily contrasts with the smoother choruses, and it is all wrapped up under a gnarly sound, static and lo-fi.

But the two singles aren’t the only surprise from the Brooklyn band, for they are also planning the release of a full-length album, The Degeneration Elegies, at the end of the year, or in early 2024. The album will come with a completely different sound due to Steve Five changing to a seven-string guitar, giving the tracks a much more heavier sound with Grunge influences.

Our old bass player Mark Shue is now in Guided by Voices, so we’ve had guest bass players on our new songs. We just got a new bass player, Vedran Mehinovic, who is a composer and has a PhD in music composition from UC Santa Cruz

“The new music we have been writing is different than our old music – I detuned my guitar to B (because Gordon Lightfoot came to me in a dream and told me to) and I now play a 7-string guitar. 7-string guitars are generally the territory of Nu-Metal, but I am using the style for a heavier grunge sound.” Steve Five
