To Hell With Tradition starts the month of October with his fourth full-length concept album “Blind Spots”. As the title offers a hint to what the individual songs will be grasping, the whole story takes the shape of the ongoing changing nature of living. Give praise to those individual little steps that take us forward as To Hell With Tradition brings forth a wholehearted inspiring kaleidoscopic indie pop record! And also, you have the opportunity to listen to the record ahead of the release date right here!

Hailing from German city Heidelberg, To Hell With Tradition aka Achim Hofmeyer loves the power and storyteller capabilities of concept albums. His output can be described as impulsive, explorative, introspective, and philosophical and supported by reckless abandon of traditional and mainstream song structures as hinted by the name of the project. What To Hell With Tradition really cares about is progressive storytelling through his music in which every piece is part of a bigger picture and best enjoyed in its intended order.
“Blind Spots” is the fourth concept installment continuing the steady walk toward awareness and growth. Rooted in the artist’s personal ponderings that unravel life and his own place and progress in the jungle, “Blind Spots” is a 12-track release valuing the calm clear mind and remembering that every step, no matter how tiny or significant, is still a single step. The individual tracks are also partially interwoven linking the album in one coherent long-track story.

Just like those individual steps come in all different forms, the songs that build up this concept LP come in an array of flavors with some being more upbeat and others more reserved and steady. Two singles have come from the LP – “Open Season“, a rhythmic song of caution that advises not boasting about your achievements, and the synth-laden song of bad decisions called “Rerun“. A third song, “Pebbles”, is available for listening via Bandcamp and offers a blast of speedy beat emphasizing the running lyrics of self-damaging behavior.
The rest of “Blind Spots” offers a whole bunch of colorful synth-flavored alt-pop rock music with power, straight-to-the-point lyrics spiced with metaphors and experiences. One with keen ears may recognize elements similar to Tame Impala and The Beatles, but one thing’s for certain. “Blind Spots” is quite a unique experience. Although uniqueness is something that’s turned into a cliche (nothing is unique, everything borrows from everything else and it’s the truth), this album remains echoing in my brains long after it ended.
One that’s a certain highlight for me is the penultimate track, “The Hangover”. Indulging in the magic of off-beat rhythm, long flooding notes from both vocals and synths, and changing atmosphere, the song which is incidentally also the longest track in the release, feels like an uplifting experience in the damned glory of endless mistakes and learning from them as you go. The organ-like synths and highly captivating chorus of “Obedience” spin upwards as well, while the lyrics explore the clashing nature of obedience and bending the rules in their favor. The whole album feels like a journey of a cautionary side showing what living with all the progress and relapses feels like.
Highly advise finding a piece of your time to listen to the whole release!
