Founding members Elash and The Sgt. formed Fat Bottomed Boys in 2020 to continue and honor the legacy of the iconic rock band by way of original music after years of playing together in an actual Queen tribute band. Fat Bottomed Boys’ inspiring sound blends classic stadium rock and pop rock in a way that invokes familiarity, yet takes on a whole new life of it’s own at another level.
The vocals by “The Sgt.” are superb and very much complimentary to the cadence of Freddy Mercury. There are certainly moments in the album that cause an audible “double-take.” The composition of the music is masterfully done, whether it’s a ballad-style piece, or a rock your socks off anthem.
The band does a great job of paying homage, as the project became a solidified concept during the 2020 quarantine as a result of bouncing ideas for a prog song off of each other reminiscent to the vibe and sound of the legendary album “Queen II.” Thematically, they were inspired by Rhye – a fictitious universe imagined by Freddie Mercury and his sister, as the lore goes – and coincidentally – an Australian author by the name of Craig Mulhal was releasing his novel “The King of Rhye” around the same time.
Conceptual compositions in hand, Elash reached out to Mulhal to see if he’d be interested in collaborating lyrically on the project, and thus, this is what began what the band refers to as a “long and fruitful collaboration.” The band’s work to date has been well received, having music featured in the end credits for the film “Borrowed Time 3,” and on a Freddie Mercury themed Mod to a Super Mario video game! File that under the coolest thing I learned about today.

The album starts off with the self-titled song “Haters Gonna Hate,” a sassy piece that brings the funk. It adds the elements of grunge, funk, and classic rock. The end result feels like something Queen would have done today. It’s loud, it’s saucy, and it’s so much fun to listen to. A primo pick for the first song.
“Rock Of Ages” is the next song and it does not disappoint! It’s an epic power balled that is energetic and fun. I can only imagine what it would be like to see this one live. Its classic sound, retro guitar licks, and stunning vocals really make this song pop. Following up that banger of a song is “I’m Not The One,” a mellow and somewhat somber piano piece. It’s beautifully composed and performed, primed to hit you in the “feels.” The lyrics come off real and genuine making this a truly well-done love song.
In the song “Get Away,” artists Secret Garden and The Dusty Man collaborate with our boys in a song about the civil rights activist, Ruby Bridges, in a narrative of her life. It’s a heartfelt hard look at the truths of Ruby dealt with in that era. “Get Away” takes power folk to a new level. While this tune does stray a bit from their traditional sound, it is a cleverly crafted collaboration and is well worth the listen.
The last song I want to touch on is “La La La.” This piece absolutely stays true to the true Queen anthem sound and inspires you to sing along. It’s got that in-your-face flare that I love to hear. These are just a few of the amazing tracks on “Haters Gonna Hate” that debuts November 24. Don’t miss out because it’s truly worth a listen!
