By this point, it’s no secret that we’re all huge fans of Edie Yvonne. The American singer and songwriter who is still in her teens yet shows a maturity and skillset way beyond her years, who’s released some of the best singles of the year like “Girl Code” and “In the Rain“. Now, to wrap up her wonderful 2023, the girl gave us another single – this time, it’s her first cover song and she chose “No Rain”, by legendary grunge-era band Blind Melon.

I always find it fascinating when artists choose to record and release some else’s song, there is something intrinsically sweet about liking a song so much that you need to make it your own. And that is exactly what Edie does on her rendition, transforms it into something that can easily fit into her own discography. Edie slowed down “No Rain” and gave it her own indie pop treatment, while still remaining incredibly faithful to the source material.
“No Rain” is a single by Los Angeles band Blind Melon, first released in 1993 – about fifteen years before Edie was even born. It was Blind Melon’s biggest hit and remembered fondly as one of the best songs from the 1990s and a turning point in grunge and alternative rock at the time. It’s a song that literally describes life going by and being unable to do anything about it, making it a very subtle take on what depression feels like even though the song itself sounds catchy and upbeat.
“No Rain” (Edie’s Version) manages to capture that exact same feeling that makes the original so compelling. Produced by Douglas Boehm, who’s worked in the past on iconic music by acts such as The Vines and Girls, Edie releasing this song herself in late December so many years after the original kind of flips its meaning a little bit. Never meant to be a Christmas song on its original run, Edie’s timing makes it a perfect soundtrack for Holiday Season ennui and depression. A time in which happiness seems to be obligatory, Edie delivers a beautiful song for the rest of us who just don’t feel like celebrating much. And I’d take more of this any day.
