It’s always exciting to get familiar with a brand new up and coming artist, especially one that showcases so much talent at such a young age. Billie Skye is an Australian girl from Byron Bay, and she’s just released her debut EP Amorous Mirage at the tender age of nineteen. Amorous Mirage comes almost two years after her first ever single, “Above Waters”, and it comes to show how much Billie has evolved and matured in so little time.
“Above Waters” as a really good acoustic pop song that already highlighted her incredible voice and songwriting talent, but Amorous Mirage comes as a full experience. The four-track EP dives into deeper, more complex and intricate production that is firmly based on Billie’s love for R&B, while still adding elements and blending styles that go from pop to blues and funk seamlessly. The opener “lover boy” is the longest track on the EP, clocking at almost five minutes, and sets the tone beautifully for what’s to come next: sultry vocals and impeccable slow burner instrumentations that create their own atmosphere and reel you in slowly.
“Embarking on the creation of ‘Amorous Mirage‘ was, for me, a profound journey through the realms of the heart, self-discovery, and unfiltered emotional expression“, Billie herself says about the process, before concluding: “In this musical terrain, every emotion was considered significant and valuable, serving as a nurturing foundation for personal development“. And there is no better way of putting into words the realms created and explored by Billie on this extremely personal debut EP.
The transitions from track to track are smooth and incredibly well rounded, bringing a softness to the flow of the music that feels organic and natural. The spoken word bridge on the second track, “lust without love”, stands as one of the absolute highlights of the entire work – feeling like a dive head on into her world at once. Billie is an impressive songwriter, managing to write into her songs a wide range of expressions and intricate, complex emotions that bring forth such vulnerability.
“kiss me” is probably the most delicate track, telling the story of a wavering relationship that fell apart and only leaves behind the feelings of what once was. With piercing lyrics that cut through with fierce fearlessness, Billie really sets the bar really high – but, fortunately, she is able to keep that emotion up right into closer “take me home”. A poignant song with a more upbeat production that really shine with R&B sensibilities and beautiful melodies all throughout the track, and finishes things off in the highest of notes.
On her stunning debut EP, Billie Skye is unafraid to really show us who she is, beaming with vulnerability and coming out stronger because of it. Billie takes you on an emotional journey and tackles love, heartbreak, lust and every other type of relationship in just four songs – and does it with enviable maturity and honesty, letting her heart lead the path every step of the way. Amorous Mirage stands tall as one of the most impressive debuts of the year, and leaves you excited for what she’ll come up with next.
