Storm Boy Reigns in the New Year “With a Gasp that Reached to the Sky”

If you’re in the hunt for music that’s both exhilarating and contemplative, Storm Boy might just be what you fancy. The Olympia, WA based, post-hardcore rock ‘n’ roll band is set to drop a new EP on January 12th called “With a Gasp that Reached to the Sky.” They openly embrace the comparisons of their dramatic, rockin’ sound to that of bands like Red City Radio and Hot Water Music. Storm Boy certainly fits the bill for fans of those projects. By my ear, I catch a gritty, underlying punk ethos that reminds me of one of my personal favorites, Against Me! With that energy in mind, the EP promises to be as dance worthy as it is thought-provoking.

ORDER “WITH A GASP THAT REACHED THE SKY” ON BANDCAMP

With a Gasp that Reached to the Sky” was recorded between July and November of 2023 at Titan Recording Studio and was mixed and mastered by Scot Michael. It will be introducing three new tracks, effectively building off of the steam, if you will (ha, see what I did there), from their lead-off single released last October titled “The Steam in the Room.” The single was accompanied by a self-directed, dystopian themed music video that we also covered here on LT1KF and is indeed also included on the upcoming EP.

Storm Boy is Chas Roberts on guitars and vocals, Jeremy Anderson on drums and backing vocals, and Jackson Portwood on bass.

“With a Gasp that Reached to the Sky,” comprised of four tracks in total, lyrically tends to be connected via themes of time and mortality. “Full Orca,” kicks off the EP, described by the band as a “yacht-smasher,” it’s an anthemic tune inspired by the infamy of the “killer whale” named White Gladis.

The second track, “Plosivs,” is lyrically expressionist in nature, described as “a reflection on the self-eating circle of time.” The third track on the EP is my personal favorite, titled “From your Mouth,” it’s an epic punk anthem inspired by a friend’s battle with dementia.

Tune into my station AMS Radio during LT1KF Indie Hour for a chance to hear this one before it’s released! The EP closes with the aforementioned post-apocalyptic love song, “The Steam in the Room.”

For me, Storm Boy’s music is all about leaning into what you’re feeling at the time, i.e. joy, enthusiasm, bravado, and emotion. The energy I pick up on from the upcoming record is a kin to “letting go” and just rollin with the rock. A perfect storm.
