ASOMATA Rocks Your Socks Off with a Debut EP

Asomata artwork for their debut self-titled EP

Asomata is a band from Athens, Greece and their name is a trip. The Latin word “asomata” translates in English to the word “incorporeal,” a word used to describe a being that possesses “no material” or “physical” existence. What an awesome band name! It compliments the “vibe” that their Grungy, Alt-Rock sound evokes quite well: mysterious, haunting, and dark at times. They recently released their debut, a self-titled EP, on January 22nd.

The release consists of five tracks and kicks off with the rockingly sinister, previously released, single titled “Little Man.” A tune that reminds me some of my all-time favorite artists such as “Badmotorfinger-era” Soundgarden and Black Sabbath.

The second track on EP, “My Reincarnation,” carries on with a backbone of Grungy rhythms and bluesy guitar licks. The band published a neat lyric video for it on YouTube, in which newspaper’s front-page headlines project the lyrics of the song as it plays on. I also like the slogan or “tag line” of the figurative publication displayed.

It adds an underlying element of social commentary to my interpretation of the words. I love the concept. Coincidentally, as the band’s lead singer Jaan Paern sings the line “I am a Failure,” I am actually reminded quite a bit of the legendary Grunge band Failure musically with this song, in terms of the melodic structuring and the “feel” of the drumming. Check out the video!

The next three tracks on the EP are equally as impressive. “Rotton Fish” is a stark track that features really cool harmonies a kin to something like Alice in Chains, but with a Stone Temple Pilots kind of swaggar. Perhaps my favorite track, and spoiler alert- one that’s landing on the AMS Radio Top 10 playlist for this month, is the song “Torn Apart.” The guitar riffing and rhythm section on that song is just filthy! (In the totally awesome urban dictionary kind of way.)

If you were to speed it up, the song would come off to me like something Thrice would play, in my opinion. The EP wraps with the eerie “Connundrum” for a closing track, and it’s a bit of a change up. The lead guitar in the intro caught my attention right away sounding almost like an 80s hard rock holdover like Queensrych at first, but only for brief moments before dispursing into a funkier, upbeat verse, followed by a crunchy, anticipated chorus. All of it is bridged together with slick sounding arpegios on lead guitar. An interesting way to round out the EP!

Overall, I enjoyed the whole EP front to back. I experienced moments of nostalgia as well as fresh, new soundscapes that had me rockin’ out. This album is a solid recommendation for fans of Alternative Hard Rock, in particular the early 90s era where it seemed like everything possessed some elements of Grunge. That’s not to say it wouldn’t be enjoyed by a wider scope of Alternative Music fans, I’d go as far to say it is even a good fit for fans of later 90s / early 00’s Alternative Rock similar to Fuel, Future Leaders of the World, and the Exies.
