February is set to end with transcendental tones, for Mary Knoblock is preparing to release her new full-length album “Halo” on 29th. On this record the Oregon-based singer-songwriter grows a pair of angelic wings and embarks on a journey through life and its mysteries, pains and uplifting moments, which have been translated into poignant, ethereal songs. As if made in heavens and then gifted to the mortals to help understand life better, “Halo” is a particularly otherworldly experience.

Much like life isn’t an easy journey, “Halo” is not something to put on for background music. Quite the opposite, this requires full attention listening, but when you do that, the effects are immediate and fairly intense. Mary Knoblock has weaved the flowing nature of cinematic dream pop into avant-garde framework, adding piano compositions and powerful vocal works into the mix. All tracks were recorded in one or sometimes two takes as live performances and the piano parts were also born live on the spot. The result is an echoing record of spirituality speaking in an unsettling and quite magical language, capable of triggering spiritual awakening.
Theme-wise “Halo” speaks of life, namely the parts of it that have to do with self-identity and human connections. Thus, the record goes deep into strong experiences like love, loss, hope, grief taking place in various situations, whether connected to oneself or with someone that’s dear. For instance, “Oh Most Beautiful Flower of Carmel” thinks about the sick friend and prays for them in an intimate, deconstructed musical landscape. Mary’s previously released single “Heaven’s Bride” is also featured on the album and tells the story of love surrounded by pain and hatred.

Part of the journey is led by avant-garde versions, which take one step further into the windy chaotic and reverberant haze where vocals penetrate through a massive wall of echoed organ. That’s the wall of madness taking the form of self-protection against the troubles of life and resulting anxiety. Still, the angelic voice finds its way through and represent a glimmer of hope in the chaos, no matter how dark things seem.
Love stood in contrast against pain and grief is explored in depth by the LP and finds a warm closure in the afterlife of “Dreamer”, the tale of lovers finding themselves in a realm free of terrors and death. That’s also the ending track for the album itself, a final part of a powerful and fairly hypnotic journey through the intimate hidden inner realms of emotions.
