Los Angeles-based indie rock trio StandBy just released their much-anticipated debut album, All for Nothing, after a successful run of singles that started with “Do It Again” almost two years ago. Their debut album is one that hits the ground running and never fully stops, managing to keep the high energy pace with ease and grace.

All for Nothing by StandBy was entirely written by the trio, which consists of Eddie Dolak on guitars and voice, Tre Poutre on bass and Trevor Quinn on drums, and produced by legend Mikal Blue. The album does an amazing job in emulating sounds that come directly from the 90s indie and grunge scenes, but with a somewhat modern and contemporary twist that could only come from the minds of youngsters such as the trio.
“All Your Fault” slams the door open with angry and frustrating lyrics that speak of politics and already show off all of the power trio’s strengths at once. Featuring powerful guitar riffs, impeccable melodic sense and killer percussion. From then on in, the boys try out a myriad of different things while still maintaining their sound in check. By the time we reach the ballad “Undefined Life Story”, almost at the halfway point, we’ve already experieced a rollercoaster of sounds that highlight exactly how versatile these boys are with their songwriting.

In an interview, the three members said that they formed the band around 2018 whilst still in music school and name acts such as Nirvana and Primus as their main influences and inspirations; and you can definitely hear that when listening to All for Nothing. It’s amazing to hear exactly how much these guys have range, managing to go from the melodic and emotional ballad “Undefined Life Story” to the hard rock of “Your Own Demise”, the first proper single from the album.
Sounding like a cross between Queens of the Stone Age and The Vines, StandBy’s debut album is one that arrives fully formed and ready to take on the world. The boys display a natural talent for melodies and riffs, and the production really stands out as the right fit for the energy levels StandBy presents. The second half of the record flies by at break-neck speed, creating whirlpools of sound that seem to swirl around frontman’s Eddie’s impressively confident vocals.
All for Nothing is one of those great debut albums that restore your faith in guitar music, sounding both like a breath of freshness to the scene as well as an homage to everyone that ever came before them. StandBy’s debut album shows a band that knows exactly what they want to do and how to do it, creating an atmosphere of urgency that somehow feels comforting and inviting, even in the angrier parts. These boys are the real deal and will go a long way, for sure.
