Realma – “Down the Railway Spine”

REALMA "Down The Real Way Spine" heavy debris version

All the way from the city of Bor in Serbia, Realma is a singer and songwriter who is unafraid of the different, the unusual. Her songs usually take you to places you never thought you’d go, and this is exactly what is happening with her brand-new single “Down the Railway Spine”. We’ve covered her singles “Wandering” and “A Hint of Pink” in the past, and this time around she comes fully formed and diving deep into the experimental pop realm, and it never sounded so good.

On the latest single, Realma deals openly and candidly with trauma and PTSD, in a single that feels both claustrophobic and comforting on its production. Her vocals sound incredibly soothing, as the chaos of the electronic and orchestral instrumentals seem to swirl around her and get more and more haunting as the track goes on. What is truly remarkable about “Down the Railway Spine” is that it reaches epic levels without ever getting too dark or overwhelming, which really is something.

The track is accompanied by a beautiful, animated music video, featuring an unnamed character racing on a motorbike across space in order to rescue a younger sibling. It was created by award-winning animator Mihajlo Dragaš and explores a very Tron and Blade Runner-style of epicness, as the hero finds their way deeper into danger in order to complete the quest. The video fits incredibly well within the atmosphere crafted by Realma on this song, which is indeed a dark one and impossible to narrow it down into simple conventions of genre. “Down the Railway Spine” is its own thing, and this is exactly what makes Realma’s music so special.

The most interesting part, is that Realma is also releasing a live version of this song that sounds and feels completely different! She is just that good, and on “Down the Railway Spine (Heavy Debris Version)” we get what feels like a brand new song, on which she changes the electronic-based production into a more guitar-centric goth rock one. Backed by a band that’s made up of other important women of the Serbian music scene, Realma’s vocals on the Heavy Debris Version sound even more on-point, the rock production seems to highlight the trauma she sings about in different ways – and even though it’s heavier, this version also sounds much more hopeful.

Both renditions of the track showcase Realma at her very best, and walk the line between the experimental and the common ground very tightly and gracefully. Realma has once and again really proven herself as a one of a kind artist, with a truly unique vision and an artistry like no other. She sounds good both on the electronics as well as with the heavy metal guitar riffs, showcasing her versatility all at once and in the same song! Very few people would even dare to attempt to release such different versions of the same song, let alone succeed in both – and she does it, and makes it seem easy.
