Following the highly acclaimed singles “ICU” and “Ipanema Rendesvouz“, the Frankfurt-based producer Luke Tangerine just released “Pastlife Mix” his latest collaboration with artist Kate Pending. Already established as one of the most interesting duos in electronic music, the German producers unite once again for something new and different with a premise like no other.
“Pastlife Mix”, as suggested by its title, is a collage of sounds taken from previous collaborations between them as well as an exploration of a brand-new sound infused with lo-fi house inclinations. Heavily influenced by deep house and synthpop, “Pastlife Mix” is a hypnotic track that enthralls the listener with Kate’s mechanical delivery and sets the tone for a very intriguing future. We can hear glimpses from stellar tracks like “Sonic Youth” and “Allein” amongst the track’s charming cacophony, creating an atmosphere of recognition and excitement.
The dadaist approach to the song’s production is a bold step for both artists, resulting in a mesmerizing landscape of colorful synths and rich textures unlike anything they’ve ever done before – or like all of them at once, I suppose.
Like a musical time capsule, “Pastlife Mix” takes a curious idea and runs with it, crafting a thrilling path between the familiar and the unknown with surgical precision at the same time that allows it to develop its own neon-tinged life. Luke & Kate’s previous work paved the way beautifully for something like this to exist and comes to show that these two have a lot more tricks up their sleeves.
“Pastlife Mix” is a captivating and gorgeous nod to how well the two artists function together, making room for a somewhat introspective exploration of memory and perception. Those themes are also promised to be explored more thoroughly on their highly anticipated upcoming collaborative album Tomorrow’s Dreams of Yesterday.
If what we’ve heard so far is any indication, their record with shift the world on its axis with unparalleled creativity and a truly unique vision of what electronic dance music can look and sound like. On “Pastlife Mix”, we already get flashes of that future – and it’s a very bright one.
