By now, it’s no secret that we’re huge fans of Edie Yvonne, the incredible indie pop singer and songwriter currently based in Los Angeles. The young artist has been carving a very interesting path for herself, aligning her own voice and songwriting with soft vocals and impeccable indie pop production.
This girl has already released several original singles by herself including “Girl Code” and “Delusion“, her latest. Alongside her own personal ride, Edie’s also released an incredible cover of “No Rain” by Blind Melon late last year, and last month No Doubt “Sometimes“. Now she’s at it again with her own rendition of the classic “Fade Into You” by Mazzy Star.
Edie’s songs always come from a place of authenticity and originality, and seeing her take on songs by other artists is such a joy. “Fade Into You” is an indie rock classic, originally released in 1993 as a part of Mazzy Star’s second album So Tonight That I Might See. Since then, the song has become truly a timeless piece of music, mostly due to lead singer Hope Sandoval’s emotional delivery. Taking on such a colossus of a song can be a hard challenge, but Edie does it to perfection.
Edie’s version of the song does and incredible job in maintaining its emotional core, especially in the vocal performance, and updates the production towards a more indie pop style that fits Edie very well. The immaculate guitar lines and dreaminess of the atmosphere are still present on this cover, but this time there is a little more of sunshine and light peeking through – and it works very well against the tension captured by the lyrics and vocals. Edie’s cover makes the song feel like her own, and it really comes to show how much of an influence Hope Sandoval and Mazzy Star always had on her own songwriting.
The production captures the essence of the original while still making room for a new perspective on such an iconic track. And this really comes a full-circle moment for Edie, who first sang the song under the guidance of Kristin Kontrol at the Anna Bulbrook’s Girl School Festival when she was only 10 years old. For it finally getting a proper recorded version after Edie’s established herself and her career in the music world is beyond sweet.
Edie Yvonne is already proven herself time and time again, both as a songwriter and as a performer, and while she’s working on her proper full-length debut she’s also gearing up for the release of an all-covers EP. Said EP, titled #covers, will include her stunning take on “No Rain” as well as a new cover originally by No Doubt, and I cannot wait to hear more.
