An album that openly deals with remembrance, loss, and change, It Was Here He Received His Only Formal Education features some of The Muster Point Project’s best work yet. Kevin himself wrote it and plays most of the instruments, with help and influence from collaborators and musicians from all over the world: the Latin rock inspirations on “Como Los Jaivas” feature traditional flutes and wind instruments played by musicians from the Andes; and the John Prine tribute track “The Singing Mailman” has drums and steel pedals from notorious Nashville artists.
This miscegenation of sounds and influences creates an exceptional album with a diverse ambiance that feels organic and refreshing. It Was Here He Received His Only Formal Education is a fearless work in its way of experimenting, and testing out brand-new ideas, at the same time that it stays absolutely true to its own core sound and aesthetic. Kevin does an impeccable job of blending all of those different influences and sounds into one cohesive body of work that stretches itself without ever breaking.

The single “I’ve Heard It All”, released at the same time as the album, is a lovely ode to canadian music and was made in two different mixes: one completely produced, mixed and mastered in Canada by Darryl Neudorf and another from Scotland-based long time Muster Point Project producer Darryll McFadyen. Both versions highlight great Canadian artists and offer completely different takes on it. It’s truly a fascinating concept and a joyride to listen to both. But no matter which version you prefer, you’ll find abound of happiness, fulfillment, and one of Kevin’s most passionate vocal performances.
On It Was Here… Kevin expands and bends the sounds to his will, as the main driving force behind the emotional rollercoaster we embark on as soon as the play button is hit. With powerful and compelling lyrics that deal with debt, grief, joy, and fun, Kevin writes and performs with hopefulness and positivity even through the darkest times.
On his third full-length record Kevin navigates through both sorrow and bliss, crafting immaculate sounds that encircle the listener fully. Rooted in true emotions and slice-of-life impressionist lyricism, It Was Here… unveils itself as a culmination of all of his past influences, inspirations and musings at once. An album you won’t want to miss, it stands as the result of a lot of work coming from a talented songwriter at his absolute prime.
